Here’s a quick backstory and then we’ll move on to the more important aspect, which is how their shared ingredient, nicotinamide riboside (NR), works.
The parent company for Tru Niagen is a California-based corporation called Chromadex.
For several years, ChromaDex’s business model was to license NR to other health companies.
Basis, which is manufactured by New York-based Elysium Health, was one of those companies.
However, from 2016 to 2018, Chromadex decided to change its business model and began revoking the licenses on NR so that its subsidiary, Tru Niagen, would be the only one left.
Here’s where it gets juicy.
After they revoked the licenses, Basis was discovered to still contain NR.
Furthermore, Chromadex also alleges that when they tested bottles of Basis, they found statistically significant amounts of an industrial solvent called toluene used in fingernail polish, lacquers, and adhesives.
This means Basis was getting their NR from somewhere else but since Chromadex owns the patent, this was very suspicious.
ChromaDex then sued Elysium for several hundred million dollars and the lawsuit is still ongoing.
How NAD and Nicotinamide Riboside Works
You already learned that your body needs NAD+ in order for your cells’ mitochondria to make energy.
Think of NAD+ production like Henry Ford’s famous assembly line for Model A cars.
Your body uses NR to make NAD+. So NR is one of the crucial ingredients in the “assembly line” of NAD+ production.
In medical terms, this is called a “precursor.” NR is the precursor to NAD+.
So if your body has plummeting levels of NAD+ but then it suddenly gets a flood of NR, it will begin manufacturing NAD+.
NR is a modified and patented form of vitamin B3. But NR is different from other forms of vitamin B3, like niacin or niacinamide, in that it does not cause any kind of “niacin flush.”
